Industries: Food Manufacturing & Storage Construction
Cold Temp Solutions designs and constructs refrigerated facilities for the food manufacturing, processing, and cold chain storage industries across the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. Facility types include refrigerated warehouses, blast freeze rooms and spiral freezer enclosures, coolers and controlled-temperature docks, food processing plant refrigeration systems, frozen distribution center cold storage additions, and combined cooler-freezer facilities with shared refrigeration plant infrastructure. Refrigeration systems are designed using ammonia (NH₃), CO₂ transcritical, HFC, or hybrid refrigerant configurations selected on the basis of facility size, product temperature requirements, long-term refrigerant regulatory compliance under CARB and the federal AIM Act, and total cost of ownership over a 20-year facility life. All food storage and processing refrigeration systems are engineered to comply with IIAR 2, ASHRAE Standard 15, California Mechanical Code Title 24, USDA and FDA facility design guidelines, and — for ammonia systems at or above the 10,000-pound PSM threshold — OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements under 29 CFR 1910.119 from the initial design phase.
Cold Temp Solutions self-performs the mechanical, refrigeration controls, and refrigerant piping scope of food storage construction projects — eliminating the coordination gap that occurs when general contractors subcontract refrigeration work to contractors unfamiliar with food facility compliance requirements. The design-build process begins with a refrigeration load calculation based on building envelope specifications, product throughput volumes, pull-down requirements, and peak ambient temperature conditions for the project location. From those loads, Cold Temp Solutions engineers select and specify compressor rack equipment, evaporator coil sizing and configuration, condenser type and capacity, refrigerant piping header sizing, and defrost system type — electric, hot gas, or off-cycle — optimized for the product being stored and the facility’s utility rate structure. Controls integration includes supervisory refrigeration controllers (Emerson E2, Danfoss AK-SM 800) with HACCP-compliant temperature logging, demand defrost scheduling, floating suction and head pressure optimization, and remote monitoring connectivity — functions required by FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) produce safety rules for facilities handling fruits, vegetables, and other temperature-sensitive commodities. PG&E FRIP rebates and Deemed Incentive programs are evaluated during the design phase for qualifying natural refrigerant installations to reduce net project capital cost.
Cold Temp Solutions serves food manufacturers, cold chain logistics operators, produce distributors, meat and poultry processors, dairy operations, and frozen food producers requiring new refrigerated facility construction or refrigeration system additions to existing facilities throughout Contra Costa, Alameda, Solano, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Fresno counties. The company has direct experience with high-velocity pull-down requirements common in blast freezing applications — where product must reach 0°F core temperature within specified timeframes — as well as the precision temperature tolerances required in pharmaceutical-grade cold storage, banana ripening rooms, and controlled atmosphere (CA) apple and pear storage. Following project commissioning and startup, Cold Temp Solutions provides ongoing preventive maintenance programs, 24/7 emergency service, and system documentation updates — including as-built P&IDs and OSHA PSM mechanical integrity records — ensuring that the refrigeration system remains compliant, efficient, and covered by technicians who know the system as built.
