Services: Energy Analysis

Cold Temp Solutions performs refrigeration system energy analyses for industrial and commercial facilities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California, identifying operational inefficiencies that increase electricity consumption and reduce system reliability. A site energy analysis evaluates the full refrigeration system — compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion devices, controls, and secondary cooling loops — against actual facility load profiles and utility billing data. Common deficiencies identified during an energy audit include oversized or underloaded compressor capacity running inefficiently at part load, elevated head pressure caused by condenser fouling or undersized condenser fan capacity, excessive defrost cycle frequency or duration wasting energy and reducing refrigerated space temperature stability, refrigerant overcharge or undercharge conditions affecting system COP (coefficient of performance), and outdated fixed-speed compressors and condenser fans that would benefit from variable frequency drive (VFD) retrofits. The analysis produces a written report ranking each identified deficiency by estimated annual energy cost impact and projected payback period for recommended corrections.

Cold Temp Solutions is experienced with Pacific Gas and Electric’s (PG&E) F-gas Reduction Incentive Program (FRIP) and other California energy efficiency rebate programs available to industrial and commercial refrigeration operators. The FRIP program provides financial incentives to California food retailers and cold storage facilities that replace high global warming potential (GWP) HFC refrigerant systems with lower-GWP or natural refrigerant alternatives — including ammonia (NH₃) and CO₂ transcritical systems — and can substantially reduce the net capital cost of a qualifying refrigeration system upgrade. Additional PG&E programs applicable to refrigeration facilities include the Deemed Incentives program for VFD installations on compressors and condenser fans, the Custom Incentive Program for projects that reduce energy use by a calculated and metered kilowatt-hour amount, and the On-Bill Financing program, which allows qualifying customers to repay the cost of energy improvements through their monthly utility bill with no upfront capital outlay. Cold Temp Solutions assists clients with program eligibility assessment, application documentation, and technical specifications required by PG&E for incentive approval.

Energy analysis services are available to food storage and distribution facilities, pharmaceutical cold rooms, post-harvest and controlled atmosphere storage operators, wineries, and commercial building owners across Contra Costa, Alameda, Solano, Sacramento, Napa, and Sonoma counties. Older refrigeration systems — particularly facilities operating fixed-speed ammonia rack systems or R-22 and R-404A HFC equipment installed before 2010 — frequently present significant energy reduction opportunities through compressor sequencing adjustments, floating head pressure control, LED lighting retrofits in refrigerated spaces, and electronically commutated (EC) evaporator fan motor replacements. Cold Temp Solutions quantifies the projected annual kilowatt-hour reduction and dollar savings for each recommended measure using facility-specific utility rate data, enabling facility managers and ownership groups to prioritize capital improvements by financial return.
